Casinos In Alabama – A Look At Brick-And-Mortar Alabama Gambling Options

Alabama, despite its outdated gambling laws, does have a few passable retail “casino” destinations for residents and visitors, however, online Alabama casinos are often the best choice. The brick-and-mortar Alabama casino market is mostly the domain of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, whose three Wind Creek AL casino Class II venues offer the most compelling domestic gaming options. However, Alabama is also home to a trio of prominent “racinos,” which gives local players a bit more to choose from.

We’ve got a brief overview of the gambling landscape in AL, and we’ve also got a few ideas on where you can actually play online when you want to have a more traditional casino experience. Are Local Casinos Legal In Alabama In 2024?

Whether or not casinos are legal in AL comes down to your definition of “casino.” If you’re thinking “Vegas-style casino,” then no, these kinds of venues are not currently legal in the Alabama gambling laws as of 2022.

However, if you consider Class II tribal gaming to be a part of the general “casino” definition, then you have several such brick-and-mortar venues to choose from. In total, there are six major retail gambling destinations in the state – three Class II AL Indian casinos and three brick-and-mortar “racino” venues.

While not found at any of the local gambling spots in the state, online casino games in Alabama can be legally accessed at the casino gambling sites listed on this site.

Note: AL Class II and “racino” casino venues may only host a combination of slots-style Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs), Electronic Gaming Machines (aka Electronic Gambling Machines, or EGMs), and Historical Horse Racing machines (HHRs, aka Instant Racing machines). Vegas-style slots, house-banked table games, poker, etc. is not permitted.

Indian Casinos In Alabama

Alabama has no commercial gaming, and state law currently prevents Class III tribal casino gambling. While this could change (and likely will change) in the future, the following AL casino list shows the main brick-and-mortar retail casino options available to AL residents and visitors.

These four venues are all owned and operated by the AL-based Poarch Band of Creek Indians:

*The Mobile Greyhound Park no longer hosts greyhound races, but you can enjoy various slot-style VLTs, EGMs, HHRs, and similar Class II gambling fare at this venue. For more robust gaming experiences, the larger Wind Creek Casino Alabama venues are a better option.

Commercial Casinos In Alabama

There are technically no commercial casinos in AL. At least, not the kind of venues you think about when you hear that term. There are a pair of prominent former dog tracks that now operate as “racino” venues, however.

Still, remember that house-banked casino games, slots, and similar fare isn’t allowed. Instead, these facilities offer VLTs, EGMs, and HHR machines to their patrons, along with various food, drink, and entertainment options.
